Manners during Qada Hajah

Shafi’i ulama’ had put forth 4 manners that should be observed during istinja’.

  1. Pertaining to the place of istinja’ ( toilet )
  2. Pertaining to manners upon entering and exiting the toilet.
  3. Pertaining to the direction faced during istinja’.
  4. Pertaining to manners done during istinja’.
  • Pertaining to the place of istinja’
  1. It’s is not permissible to do it on roads travelled upon or places where people sat.
  2. It is not permissible to do istinja; in holes in the ground or on walls for fear of it bringing harm to animals living the holes. ( Sahih Imam Mislim : 269 )
  3. It is also not permissible to do istinja’ under fruit bearing trees.
  4. It is not permissible to do it in flowing body of water ( Sahih Imam Mislim : 281 )
  • Pertaining to manners upon entering and exiting the toilet.
  1. Enter with the left foot and exiting with the right foot.
  2. Saying the appropriate prayer before entering the toilet. ( Sahih Imam Al Bukhari : 142, Sahih Imam Muslim : 375 )
  • Pertaining to direction faced during istinja’.
  1. It is not permissible to face the qiblah or facing the opposite direction when doing istinja’ in an open space. ( Sahih Imam Al Bukhari :381 Sahih Imam Muslim : 264 )
  2. It is permissible though to face the qiblah or facng the opposite direction to it if you are in a toilet.
  • Pertaining to manners done during istinja’.
  1. One should not look at the sky or the feces or urine when doing istinja’.
  2. One should not talk either.
